You can bake great bread at home without preservatives. The problem is, that lovely bread just doesn't last long due to mold. The University of Alberta thought there must be a way to make better preservative-free bread. Their Food Microbiology Lab discovered a natural flavorless component that happens to be anti-fungal.
You may have a backyard garden but depending on where you live you can only grow part of the year. If you build an underground greenhouse however, you could have yummy produce 24/7. Check out the video as it shows what it all involves.
Ship traffic creates a lot of noise that confuses and threatens whales. The NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) has built an app for iPhone and iPad that will help ship captains keep out of whales' way. Not only does it alert captains to the presence of whales but also advises them how to steer clear and keep whales safe. This sounds very cool and certainly eco-friendly.
Discovered in 2004 and dubbed the "miracle material" for its amazing properties, Graphene could be used to make rapid charge, high storage capacitors that would make batteries a thing of the past... if only we can find an inexpensive way to mass produce it

In the media we seem to hear a lot about plug-in cars not doing so well. When you compare their sales to regular gas guzzling cars then yes, they don't do as well. As far as sales though, electric cars sales are on the rise so don't let the media and whoever feeds them their info keep you from buying one.
A teeny tiny piglet was born without the use of his back legs. He's adorable trying to balance on his front legs. Veterinarian Len Lucero felt the little guy could use some help and built him a wheelchair with K'NEX. The piglet's name is Chris P. Bacon and he is so cute you won't be able to resist watching him.
Cycling is very popular in Seattle which is why its a little surprising that they don't have a bike sharing program. Really the only reason bike sharing isn't up and running is the law requiring people of all ages to wear helmets. Those foam and plastic things on people's heads do look silly but if they prevent injury you might as well put the thing on. Puget Sound Bike Sharing is planning to set up shop with helmet rental included. I hope it works out and is wildly successful.
Republicans won't take any environmentally friendly nonsense. Sustainable development practices which were outlined in the U.N.'s Agenda 21 are striking fear into their silly hearts. They plan to institute a bill that would keep that agenda from being followed. Yes, a clean and green environment is truly scary. Run in fear from clean air, water and food you backwoods thinking republican Iowans!!
Yay coal! I'm kidding of course since most of us are at least somewhat aware of how dirty the industry is. China, on the other hand thinks coal is wonderful. Not only do they think coal is wonderful, their consumption of it is on the rise. Did they not get the memo? Maybe they are in a perpetual state of opposite day. We say, "Coal is bad and dirty!". They say, "Coal is good and clean!".
Dumpster diving usually brings only a few things to mind, such as foraging for food, discarded furniture, and maybe just yuck. Stefan Beese looked at a dumpster and thought about swimming in it. He turned a dumpster into a very snazzy looking above ground pool in his backyard. It looks lovely and nothing like a dumpster.
