As part of the Endangered Species Act, polar bears have been awarded over 120 million acres of "critical polar bear habitat". This should keep coastal land and waters safe for them as they are vital for their survival. I'm not sure how this will be enforced but it does sound nice.
Climate changes are expected to trigger a sudden and drastic drop in polar bear populations. Researchers believe some populations will become extinct and others will survive with a much reduced size. It is early yet they don't know for sure what will really happen but at this point polar bear populations are threatened by climate changes.
Obama's Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced over the weekend that the Administration would keep Bush's limits on the Endangered Species Act protection of the Polar Bear, raising anger and eyebrows in the Environmental and Scientific community
